Textual Analysis "One (Your Name)"
Cinematography:
The first show is an establishing shot that is at the same time a birds-eye-view shot showing a silver surface. The next birds-eye shot is showing the key element of the whole video, the DJ Pad, on which a person is pressing keys. Further close-ups are explaining the that this DJ Pad is making the music, this is underlined by another close-up shot showing the person changing the keys which you can hear. Another Point-of-view shot is showing the DJ Pad again on which the hand you can see is changing several key and buttons what has an effect on the sound. This gives the audience the impression of seeing live how the song is made and produced. A following close-up shows a had taking a microphone on which you can hear Pharrell Williams singing in the song what underlines the feeling of being entertained live. The next extreme close-up shows an eye in which inside you can see the DJ Pad again and the videos progress. That makes the video kind of unique because it is a style that seems to be new and never seen before. After that you see a POV again showing how the scene changed and the people started to celebrate and dance crazy. All that gives you the impression of an underground club and its different audience. Further birds-eye shots, POV’s and dutch tilts show the people dance wild and starting to act weird. All that gives you the feeling that they are drugged, what gets confirmed in the next mid shot where people are inhaling laughing gas out of the gas pipe. Another mid shot shows a woman dancing that has strong bright light in her background so that you can only see here shape. That gives the feeling that the video sells itself on a kind of sex-focused basis to attract men. Further close-ups show people in masks going crazy and getting close together, what shows indifference and underlines the impression of them being not their selves. A mid shot shows a person knocking out the DJ with a bottle and a further birds-eye show shows the DJ lying unconscious on the table. After that the camera falls down on the table next to the DJ and show her face and blood running out of her eye. All that makes it different to a normal club scene you imagine and leaves you behind with lots of questions you want to have answered.
Sound:
The sound is made really tricky because you can’t say if the song is diegetic sound or non-diegetic sound. However you can hear some diegetic sounds like the rat moving on the table, what just makes you thing where this location could be. However that presents the kind of style all this is about -underground music and not mainstream. Another tricky thing is the voice singing on the song because you can see a person tacking the microphone but you don’t actually see the person singing. Further diegetic sounds are a person spitting fire and people clapping to the beat, what actually fits really well in the song, as well as the sounds of gas escaping the bottle and people inhaling it. The best effect is probably when the DJ Pad gets moved and half unplugged and you can hear that on the music as well as you can see it. After this you can hear the bottle breaking that was used to knock out the DJ and the rat moving again, what is in my eyes the key of the video. It is the opening and the closing and the rat is different, it is white, as well as the audience and everything is different.
Editing:
In the video have been lots of specials and basically was the video living of all the fast cuts that made the video interesting and mysterious. You can see the camera pictures moving in the beat to the bass. As well there is the eye that shows what the camera films and has edited words in it, like the songs name, “One (Your Name)”. In addition are there fancy shapes likes stars moving through the picture as well as flames in which you can see the artists faces in strong bright colours. All that makes the video interesting and wanting for more.
Mise-en-scene:
The whole video is set in a really dark place that is kind of scary and uncomfortable. However during the video there are a lot of bright colours coming in what makes the video moving and varied. The people are wearing these bright masks that are nice because of the colour but really scary at the same time because you never can see a proper face and if than you see wide opened eyes with huge pupils and weird face expressions. Because of all that underground setting and the new vibes am I a big fan of the video even though I don’t particular like what the video shows I still think it is great and really well done. I like the song because of its genre and support mainly the idea of not doing what the rest is doing, in my eyes is it a new way of house music videos that used to show lots of beach, lightly dressed women and lots of champagne. I like, that this video is addressed to the crazy people, even though it is going a bit to far!
